In most modern vehicles, the steering relies on either hydraulic or electric power. When the engine shuts down due to a battery, alternator, or belt failure, the power steering stops working, and the steering wheel becomes rigid, making it difficult to control the vehicle.

Loss of assistance in the direction


Power steering relies on the operation of either the engine or the electrical system. When either of these fails, the steering wheel doesn't lock completely, but it becomes extremely stiff.

In hydraulic systems, the pump stops generating pressure when the engine is turned off, causing resistance when turning the steering wheel.


Electric power steering without power


In electrical power steering (EPS) systems, a lack of voltage causes the steering module to stop assisting, increasing the effort required to turn.
